It didn’t take long for Juan Soto to make a big splash in his first spring training game with the Mets.
After receiving a rousing ovation from the orange and blue faithful as he stepped to the plate for his first spring at-bat, Soto worked himself into a 2-1 count, before crushing a Colton Gordon fastball over the left-center field fence for a solo home run.
The homer left the bat at 106.2 mph and traveled an estimated 426-feet.
“It felt pretty good,” he said afterwards. “It means everything we’ve been doing is paying off. We’ve been working really hard this offseason to be ready and be in good shape. I’m putting in my swings as much as possible this year, and it’s just paying off.”
The 26-year-old was beat by Gordon’s 2-0 fastball, but when the southpaw came back with the pitch a second time, he knew he needed to make him pay.
“He threw that fastball, I could see on his face he was feeling himself, so if he came with another one I just had to make sure I didn’t miss it.”
