The 2025 Masters was a thrilling ride for golf fans, and it ended with Rory McIlroy taking down Justin Rose in a playoff round to complete his career grand slam.
The winner of the tournament in 2024, Scottie Scheffler, ended up drawing some backlash when handing McIlroy his green jacket after his win, and he recently addressed the situation.
After shooting par in the opening round, McIlroy responded by shooting 6-under-par in each of his next two rounds, giving him a two-stroke lead heading into the final day. It was a roller-coaster of a ride for McIlroy, who shot 1-over-par on Sunday, but when all was said and done, he finally earned that elusive Masters victory.
“It’s the best day of my golfing life,” McIlroy said of his victory at the Masters. “I’ve literally made my dreams come true.”
After his win, Scheffler presented McIlroy with his green jacket, but the ceremony was rather awkward, as Scheffler immediately bolted out of the picture after giving McIlroy his jacket.
After seeing all the backlash he has faced for the incident, Scheffler explained why he opted to fade into the shadows so quickly.
“In that moment, it was such an emotional day for him, I kind of just tried to stay out of the way and basically just get the jacket on without embarrassing him or myself,” Scheffler explained about what happened between him and McIlroy, per Cameron Jourdan of Golfweek.
Scottie Scheffler was asked what stood out to him about being in Butler Cabin with Rory McIlroy on Sunday.

With the Masters in the books, the next PGA Tour tournament is the RBC Heritage, which is set to kick off on Thursday, April 17.
As is usually the case, Scheffler is the heavy favorite to win the event, as he is still looking for his first win of the new year.
