CARLSBAD, Calif. — The 2025 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship is underway.

The best teams in women’s college golf are at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa’s North Course for the second straight year battling it out for a national title. Stanford is the defending national champion and is the No. 1 team in the field this week. Play started Friday morning, kicking off four rounds of stroke play.

The saying goes, you can’t win a tournament in the first round, but you certainly can lose it. Good news for the 30 teams in the field is eight of them advance to match play, where anything can happen.

How important is getting off to a good start? A look at the numbers and history the past four years shows it’s not everything.

There’s a lot of red on the scorecard early for Oklahoma State, which has a combined nine birdies about halfway through its first nine holes. The Cowgirls are at 6 under and three shots ahead of Big 12 foe Kansas. Ellie Bushnell also has the early solo lead with three birdies in seven holes.

OSU had four of its five players birdie the par-5 second. And based off early scoring, expect a few more birdies this year than last year when Omni La Costa hosted NCAAs for the first time. It was the first tournament post renovation, and there was still plenty of firmness, especially on the greens. With those softened a hair, expect the best amateurs in the world to feast.
