DARTMOUTH — Lucas Munafo used to caddy for Mike Adao at the Country Club of New Bedford.
Now, they are partners and making a ton of noise at the 95th annual Country Club of New Bedford Four-Ball tournament.
With a thrilling 1-up victory over Scott Ferreira and Michael Morgan on the 18th hole on Saturday, Adao and Munafo punched their first ever ticket to the finals of the Four-Ball in just their second year of playing together.
“It feels good,” said Adao, who has played in the Four-Ball for more than a decade. “It was a long week and tiring. It was a lot of grinding with good holes and bad holes. I didn’t play great today, but my partner did.”
Adao sank a putt on the 18th hole to seal the victory.
“We lost 17 to go even and it came down to that putt on 18,” said Adao, who is in car sales.
Adao said that he and Munafo balance each other out on the course.
“He’s just smooth. He’s just relaxed. There’s no nerves on that kid,” Adao said. “I’m always nervous, squeezing the club.”
Adao is excited for the opportunity to play for the Four-Ball championship on Sunday afternoon.
“It’s going to take a lot of good golf,” he said. “Those guys behind us are really good.”
White, Harney reach Four-Ball final
Mark White and Joe Harney pulled out a 1-up win over the father-son duo of Robert and Zach Mangelson on the 18th hole to advance to the finals. A shot that went out of bounds into the parking lot cost the Mangelsons on the final hole.
“I’m excited to be going to the finals,” said Harney, who is in his second year playing the Four-Ball with White. “The job is not finished. We’re ready for tomorrow. We’ve got one more match and I’m excited for it.”
Harney is used to pressure moments on the golf course, playing as a professional from 2016 to 2019. A highlight of his golf career was winning the Atlantic National Classic in 2017.
“Today’s match was fun,” said Harney, a graduate of Catholic Memorial. “That’s why I play. It was tight down the end. It was never more than 1 up the whole match. It was incredible.”
The win was bittersweet for White, who defeated his son-in-law, Zach Mangelson, to reach his first CCNB Four-Ball final since 1992.
“It was a little different playing against my son-in-law, I’ll tell you that,” he said. “It’s too bad how the (18th) hole ended because the match was so good. They had a couple of bad breaks on the last hole.
“This is a tough tournament to get to the finals. It’s a six-day grind and a lot of stuff happens.”
White knows it will take a great round of golf on Sunday to capture his second CCNB Four-Ball title.
“If you get this far, you’re playing good golf,” he said. “Tomorrow, we have to play well. I didn’t play that well today. He carried the ball today. Tomorrow, I have to play better.”
