The Palm Beach Post occasionally will introduce you to a different professional golfer living in our region, whether on the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions, LPGA Tour or LIV Golf.
The area is the mecca of golf with northern Palm Beach County having the highest concentration of professional golfers on major professional tours than anywhere in the world. Today, we take a look at a 28-time PGA Tour winner and four-time major champion who recently won The Players Championship. Here are five things to know about Jupiter’s Rory McIlroy.
Set to join Tiger Woods $100 million career earnings club
McIlroy, who is from Northern Ireland, earned $4.5 million for winning The Players Championship, boosting his career PGA Tour prize money to $99,709,062. His next event, the Texas Children’s Houston Open, likely will put the 35-year-old in the company of Tiger Woods as the only PGA Tour golfers with more than $100 million in prize money. Woods, who lives on Jupiter Island, has made $120,999,166.
Tied for 20th on PGA Tour all-time wins list
McIlroy’s win at The Players Championship marked the eighth consecutive year he has won at least one event on Tour and fourth straight in which he has at least two titles. McIlroy now is in the top 20 all-time with 28 Tour wins, tied with Paul Runyan. Next on the list with 29 wins are Gene Littler and Lee Trevino. His wins include the 2011 U. S. Open, 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship and 2014 British Open. McIlroy has 43 worldwide wins, including 18 on the DP World (European) Tour. He is a three-time PGA Tour Player of the Year and FedEx Cup winner; and four-time European Tour Player of the Year. He has played in six Ryder Cups.
Would fall asleep with golf club in hand
McIlroy was born on May 4, 1989, in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland. His father, Gerry, a one-time scratch golfer, introduced Rory to golf and was his coach. After he was shown the proper grip by his father, Rory, reportedly, started taking a club to bed with him, holding the club the way his father taught. Gerry started taking Rory to Holywood Golf Club and Rory, at 7 years old, became the youngest member of the club.
Purchased home in Bear’s Club from Ernie Els
McIlroy lives in the Bear’s Club, where he also is a member. He also plays out of Michael Jordan’s Grove XXIII. McIlroy purchased the property from Hall of Fame golfer Ernie Els in 2012 for $11 million. Els, like McIlroy, has been No. 1 in the world. The property includes an estate with more than 13,000 square feet, nine bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. McIlroy can kick back in the recording studio, game room or home cinema or get some work done in the gym, infinity pool or tennis court.
Met wife when she saved him from missing tee time at Ryder Cup
McIlroy met his wife, Erica, in 2012 when she worked as a PGA Tour transport official. She helped save him from missing his tee time at the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah, outside of Chicago, after he overslept because of a time-zone mix-up. McIlroy was dating tennis superstar Caroline Wozniacki at the time and became engaged to Wozniacki before they called it off in 2014. Rory and Erica, who was born and raised in Rochester, New York, then became serious. They were married on April 21, 2017.
