Rory McIlroy went into Sunday’s final round of the Masters well aware of his unfortunate history at Augusta National. But every Masters champion has a signature moment, and McIlroy may have found his on No. 10.

McIlroy bounced back from a double bogey on the first hole to recapture the lead, making the turn with decent separation against Bryson DeChambeau. But given the 2011 meltdown on No. 10, Rory needed to show he had the round in control.

He certainly surprised himself in the process. On his second shot in that par-4 10th hole, Rory dropped the club at the end of his follow through from 189 yards out. Whenever a golfer does that, it usually means impending disaster. But, uh, this happened for Rory instead:

He put the shot within 15 feet of the hole — it couldn’t have gotten much better than that. The shot was so good, in fact, that it almost looked like a celebratory club drop (think bat flip).

But no, McIlroy told the CBS broadcast as he made his way to the green that he really thought he struck that shot poorly. He would birdie the hole.
