Rory McIlroy will play alongside Wyndham Clark in the final group of the BMW Championship on Sunday.

McIlroy’s third-round 65 saw him move into a tie for second, but he failed to gain any ground on Clark after the US Open champion posted the same score.

Sunday’s final round at Bellerive should be a thrilling one to watch, with the Northern Irishman attempting to chase down the American.

The 37-year-old will be desperate to end his season on a high, but Wyndham Clark is an extremely strong front-runner.

He has won three of the previous four 54-hole leads that he has held on the PGA Tour.

He will be tested to the limit on Sunday, though, with McIlroy set to chase him down.

Rory McIlroy suggested Wyndham Clark could win Player of the Year if he triumphs this week at the BMW.

So he’s clearly a huge admirer of the two-time major winner’s game.

McIlroy spoke to Amanda Balionis after his third-round 65 at Bellerive on Saturday.

The six-time major champion was asked whether he feels like he has a genuine chance of winning on Sunday.

Yeah, it’s good to be in the final group, but when you start six, seven back, that’s a lot to make up, McIlroy admitted.

But if I focus on myself, go out there, try to shoot a good score — I shot a 64 and a 65 this week — shoot something similar tomorrow, you never know.

Of course, McIlroy is actually only five strokes adrift of Clark heading into the final round, rather than ‘six or seven’.

Much will depend on Clark, of course. If he goes out and shoots a round in the mid-60s, he will almost certainly win.

Rory McIlroy will attempt to chase down Wyndham Clark

If anyone is capable of hunting down the two-time US Open champion, it’s McIlroy.

However, there are other players in the race to win as well, including Patrick Cantlay, Chris Gotterup and Gary Woodland.

Bellerive has proven to be gettable, with good golf shots being rewarded.

However, poor shots have been severely punished, and that’s the way it should be.

Rory McIlroy will have to find more fairways on Sunday if he is to have any chance whatsoever of catching Wyndham Clark.

One thing’s for sure, despite Clark’s undoubted confidence, he would have preferred to have someone else in his rearview mirror other than McIlroy.
