Rory McIlroy is trending on social media for a "classless" remark before the 2025 Ryder Cup.
The 2025 Ryder Cup is set to begin later this month. The golf event, which pits America's best against Europe's best, is being held at Bethpage Black in New York. The three-day tournament is set to begin on Friday, September 26 and run through Sunday, September 28.
McIlroy, 36, is no stranger to the Ryder Cup. He's played for Europe at the Ryder Cup in every edition from 2010 to 2023, with Europe winning in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018 and 2023. He's looking for win No. 6 later this week.
But heading into the event, McIlroy is taking heat for a pre-Ryder Cup trash talk remark.
McIlroy, who won The Masters earlier this year, is firing shots at USA golf star Bryson DeChambeau.
DeChambeau got the trash talk started earlier this week, saying that preparations for the event have been "no joke" for the U.S. team, while adding that he'd be getting into McIlroy's "ear a little bit" if they match up.
McIlroy has since fired back – hard.
European golf star fires shot at DeChambeau
McIlroy accused DeChambeau of needing to mention other golfers in order to get attention for himself.
"I think the only way he gets attention is by mentioning other people," McIlroy told The Guardian. "That is basically what I think of that. To get attention, he will mention me or Scottie [Scheffler] or others."
It's an odd remark from McIlroy, even if DeChambeau kind of started it. DeChambeau has become a lot more likable in recent years, helping grow the game, especially on social media and on YouTube.
"We don't have the context of the conversation nor the question McIlroy was asked by The Guardian that prompted this response. Therefore, we can only react to the quote itself, and at face value, it's just incredibly strange," Outkick wrote.
"You can question some of the moves we've seen out of DeChambeau over the years, but the guy is a savant at garnering attention and moving the needle."
Hopefully, we'll get a Bryson vs. Rory matchup – or two – at the Ryder Cup next weekend.
