Kevin Durant has already made history with his four Olympic gold medals with Team USA, but the Houston Rockets star isn’t ruling out going for a fifth.
Durant said he’d play for Team USA at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics if he’s still capable of contributing, though he said he doesn’t want to receive a pity invite to be on the team.
“If I’m still me, I’ll play,” Durant said when asked about playing in 2028. “I don’t want to be that veteran that sits on the end of the bench.”
Durant suiting up for the 2028 Olympics doesn’t seem too inconceivable. He’s 36 right now, meaning he’d be 40 by the time the Olympics roll around. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James managed to suit up for Team USA at the age of 39, though it’s a bit unfair to compare James’ durability to any other player’s.
As for James, he’s held steady that he doesn’t expect to play in 2028.
“Where we at, man, 2025 right now? Nah, nothing has changed,” James said in June. “I mean, if I had to look at it right now through a microscope, I would say that, me being able to support Team USA for the rest of my life — that’s for sure. But me actually going on and playing, I don’t see it happening.”
While Durant isn’t the MVP candidate he once was, he’s managed to stay extremely productive as he’s aged. He’s coming off a season in which he played 62 games, putting up 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game while shooting 52.7 percent from the field and a scorching 43 percent from deep.
His game doesn’t rely too much on his athleticism, so it’s fair to think he could still be playing at a high level four years from now.
Durant has established himself as one of, if not the greatest, members of Team USA ever with his four gold medals, but a competitor like him likely wouldn’t pass up the chance to add another to his resume.
