Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson remains unsigned through the first three weeks of the NHL’s free agency period.
The Red Wings extended a qualifying offer to Edvinsson, ensuring they maintain control of his restricted free agent rights. However, he remains eligible to sign an offer sheet with another NHL team.

Despite him having yet to affix his signature to a contract, it doesn’t appear as though the Red Wings are in danger of the Swedish blue liner being lured away via an offer sheet.
Per the latest from longtime Red Wings beat writer Ansar Khan, the club is ready to match any offer sheet that he could potentially receive.

Since being chosen sixth overall by the Red Wings in the 2021 NHL Draft, Edvinsson has emerged as a foundational piece of Detroit’s defense corps. The 22-year-old has solidified himself as one of the club’s premier blueliners and is widely viewed as second only to Moritz Seider in the team’s long-term plans on the blue line.

Edvinsson took another step forward in 2025-26, dressing for 72 contests while setting personal bests offensively. He found the back of the net nine times and added 16 assists to finish the year with 25 points.
His season was briefly interrupted when a nagging injury flared up again toward the end of January, ultimately requiring surgery. Despite the setback, he recovered quickly enough to return to Detroit’s lineup before February came to a close.
Through 175 NHL appearances, Edvinsson has accumulated 60 points on 19 goals and 41 assists. He’s also logged more than 21 minutes of ice time per game over his career while posting a plus-17 rating.
