RBC Heritage Is In, but PGA Tour’s 2028 Schedule Has Gaps

The PGA Tour has found a place for RBC Heritage in 2028. The current official tracker does not say where on the calendar that place will be.

The RBC Heritage became the ninth tournament confirmed for the new PGA Tour Championship Series in an official tracker updated Sept. 3. The others are the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, Cadillac Championship, GO by Raymond James, a Sompo-sponsored event, the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday, The Sentry, Travelers Championship and Truist Championship.

Add THE PLAYERS Championship, the four majors, a Championship Series Finale and two weeks of the TOUR Championship, and 17 of the promised 24 event weeks are identified. The annual team event accounts for another week. That leaves six without a named tournament in the current tracker.

The 17 identified weeks include nine Championship Series tournaments, THE PLAYERS Championship, four majors, one Championship Series Finale and two TOUR Championship weeks.

A Good Tournament Can Still Get a Bad Date

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp introduced the two-series model in June at the Travelers Championship. The Championship Series is supposed to bring the Tour’s best players together regularly, while a concurrent Challenger Series provides the route into it.

Announcing the names is simple. RBC Heritage joins the list, the Tour moves to the next opening and nobody has to study a calendar to understand the news.

The dates will be tougher.

I have worked around golf calendars for most of my professional life. One date moves and suddenly a club is revisiting staffing, member access, sponsor obligations, practice time and travel. The PGA Tour deals with those same moving parts on a much larger scale, with players also deciding how many consecutive weeks they can compete and how they want to prepare for the majors.

A good tournament can get squeezed. Put it in the wrong stretch and the field can feel the effects, regardless of what series name sits above it. The Tour says its best players will meet more often in 2028, but that promise cannot be checked until the dates are public.

RBC Heritage does not have one in the tracker. Neither do the other eight Championship Series tournaments on the list.

The finish also needs explaining. The Tour has identified a Championship Series Finale along with two weeks of the TOUR Championship. The tracker does not show how those three weeks will be ordered or how they will relate to one another. If fans need a diagram to follow the final month, the Tour will have created a problem for itself.

The Challenger Series Gets One Sentence

The six unfilled weeks give the PGA Tour room to work around the tournaments already chosen. The tracker offers no hint about which events will come next.

Meanwhile, the Challenger Series gets one sentence in the tracker. It will run concurrently and serve as the direct pathway to the Championship Series.

These details may be addressed elsewhere in the Tour’s broader rollout. They are not included in the schedule tracker used for this article.

A player beginning 2028 in the Challenger Series cannot learn much from the current tracker. It does not explain what results will earn, how quickly movement can happen or whether a strong month can change somebody’s position. Fans will need to understand the climb, too. A pathway that requires constant explanation will be difficult to follow from one tournament to the next.

The Tour did not owe all of those answers in an RBC Heritage update. It will owe them before the new model begins.

The full Championship Series schedule is expected in February. Players will be checking whether the busy stretches are workable. Fans will want the difference between the Championship Series Finale and the two-week TOUR Championship explained. Anyone starting in the Challenger Series will want to know exactly what can move him up.
