The United States got off to a good start in defending its Presidents Cup title — again — but the International team is close behind entering Day 2 of the team golf competition.
Winners of the past 10 Presidents Cups, the U.S. jumped to a 3-2 lead on the first day of four-ball play. Scottie Scheffler, much maligned for his poor showings in past team events, picked up a 1-up win alongside Sam Burns over Min Woo Lee and Sungjae Im. The world No. 1 gave his pairing the lead on the 17th hole and sealed it on the 18th with tap-in pars. PGA Tour rookie Jackson Koivun and Justin Thomas ran away with their highly anticipated match, beating Corey Conners and Nico Echavarria 4&3.

Today sees the teams try their hand at foursome play, where teammates alternate shots down the course. Russell Henley and Jacob Bridgeman were held out of U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker’s Thursday lineup, while Geoff Ogilvy kept Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Nick Taylor off his.

Round 2: Friday, Sept. 25
Day 2 of the 2026 Presidents Cup will broadcast nationally on Golf Channel starting at 2 p.m. Teams will take part in foursome play with two-player teams facing off and alternating shots on each hole.

Presidents Cup format: What is foursomes?
On Friday, teams will play five matches of foursomes, where teammates alternate taking the pair’s shots for each hole. One player will tee off on odd-numbered holes, and the other tees off on the even-numbered ones. The pair that wins the most holes earns the point for their team.

What is the Presidents Cup?
The Presidents Cup is a team golf event run by the PGA Tour pitting 12 U.S. players against 12 from around the world (excluding Europe, which competes in the Ryder Cup). It started in 1994 and takes place every other year, the off years of the Ryder Cup. There are 30 matches of four-ball, foursome and singles play over four days, and the team that reaches 15.5 first wins the trophy. The United States is 13-1-1 throughout the tournament’s history and has won 10 in a row.
