Wednesday is set up to be a special day for Shady Spring golf.

All four Tigers wound up in the top six after the first round of the state tournament Tuesday afternoon on the Speidel Golf Club/Jones Course at Wheeling’s Oglebay Park. Paced by Cooper Ward’s 4-over 75, Shady shot a combined 26-over to lead the team race by 13 strokes over second-place Wheeling Central.

Ward’s score leaves him in a tie for the individual lead with the Knights’ Luke Tiu.

Tyler Beard is in third at 9-over. Freshman Grant Winkler and senior Jack Williams are both at 13-over and tied for fifth.

Also representing Region 3 among the top 10 scores was Nicholas County’s Maddox Smallwood. He’s one of five golfers tied for tenth at 17-over.

In Class AAA, Region 3 medalist Isaac Hutchison of Greenbrier East is in a three-way tie for seventh 8-over.

Region 3 was also represented strongly in Class A, with Montcalm’s Rocky Frye sitting in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard at 8-over.

River View’s Andrew Addair, the region’s other individual qualifier, is one of three golfers tied for tenth at 16-over.

Midland Trail, fresh off its Region 3 team championship, has a top 20 golfer in Jacob Brown. He and three others are tied at 16th after shooting 19-over.

Tee times on Wednesday will begin at 8:30 a.m.
