The strange journey of the 2026 Orioles season continues, now with the team just one game back of .500 for the first time since the end of April. A whole lot of baseball has happened between now and then. A lot of that baseball was bad in May and June. Things have gone a bit better starting around mid-July, and now the Orioles have won five of their last six to keep themselves in a decent position.
In this week’s episode of the podcast, I’m trying not to get too excited about the Orioles having just swept the Athletics. After all, those were all ugly wins, and there are still concerns to be had about a big chunk of the lineup on a nightly basis, to say nothing else of other problems that are either ongoing or could flare up at any moment. Nothing is settled, except that with 25 games left, the Orioles have about a 25% chance to make it. That’s better than it looked like this season would go a few months ago.

I also go into the mailbag for some thoughts on the motivations behind trading Adley Rutschman. It’s easier to talk about now that close to a month has passed and the fresh feeling of shock has faded. Plus, y’know, he really hasn’t looked good yet for the Red Sox. I feel bad for him but I don’t feel bad for the Red Sox.
