The 2025 John Deere Classic teed off Thursday at TPC Deere Run. The first round saw Doug Ghim take an early lead after a scorching round of 62 (‑9), with Austin Eckroat and Max Homa close behind at 63 (‑8).
Four golfers — including David Lipsky, Sam Stevens, Justin Lower and Michael Kim — were tied for fourth at 64 (‑7), as the leaderboard began to take shape.
However, early on Friday, before the second round could begin, the PGA Tour announced unfortunate news about 40-year-old golfer Nicholas Lindheim.
“Nicholas Lindheim (back injury) is a WD [withdrawn] prior to the second round of the John Deere Classic,” the tour posted on X.
The John Deere Classic is the first event Lindheim participated in this year. He carded a 75 (+4) in Thursday’s opening round and it was very much possible that he would miss the cut if he didn’t improve his score on Friday. His round included a front‑nine 37 and back‑nine 38.
The back injury was significant enough for him to withdraw before teeing off in round two.
Homa started strong and if he continues with this momentum, the John Deere Classic could very well become his first trophy in 2025. This year has been unforgiving to the $28 million star who, in the 16 events played, made the cut in only eight. And out of those eight, in only one did he finish in the top 25.

“I just did everything really solid. I made a ton of putts. Kept the driver in good spots. Got to take advantage of my iron play, my wedge play.” Homa said in the press conference on Thursday.
“So, just always for me this season started from the tee, and it was plenty good enough today. The rest of my game I think got [to] show how it’s felt the last few months without any good results.
“Always feels good to get off to a good start when you’re struggling, that’s for sure.”
