  • The Ford Mustang GTD currently produces 815 hp from a supercharged 5.2-liter V8.
  • Production is limited, and each one starts at over $300,000.
  • The GTD is essentially a GT3 race car built for street use.

If you had high hopes of securing the purchase rights of a new Ford Mustang GTD, only to miss out, we have some good news for you. The order books are set to open back up.

According to Ford Authority, the Blue Oval brand will start taking fresh applications from interested parties. You can pop over to Ford’s website to virtually raise your hand, then you’ll get a reminder notice ahead of the day that the application window actually opens.

Ford continues to build the Mustang GTD, and will reportedly do so for the next three years. The next application window opens on April 17th. This actually coincides with the Mustang’s 62nd birthday.

That April 17th date goes back to the Mustang’s official debut at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. If you could put someone from that day in a time machine and show them a GTD, I can only assume their head would actually explode.

The Mustang GTD is essentially a GT3 race car in street-car clothing. You have a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine doling out 815 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. Ford developed the car to boast 50-50 weight distribution. The suspension system uses adaptive spool valve dampers and a rear pushrod setup. And there’s an excessive use of carbon fiber body panels.

There’s also a $300,000 starting price tag. But even if you have the cash, Ford hand-picks its buyers through this application process. If you’ve got the dough and Ford feels you have the desire too, maybe you’ll get lucky.

Motor1’s Take: The Mustang GTD is truly a wicked piece of engineering. In fact, there may soon be word of an even more hardcore variant since the rumor is that Ford just set an even faster time around the Nürburgring.

Maybe that’s the one to wait for if you’re planning to apply.
