The winner of the 154th Open Championship on Sunday at Royal Birkdale won’t just leave with the Claret Jug. They’ll also take home the largest payday in tournament history.

The R&A increased this year’s purse to a record $17.75 million, up $500,000 from last season and a significant jump from the $10.25 million prize fund offered the last time The Open was contested at Royal Birkdale in 2017. The champion will earn $3.2 million, the biggest winner’s check in championship history.
Sam Burns entered the July 19 final round with a two-shot lead and a chance to capture the first major championship victory of his career.
