Preston Stout, the No. 1 amateur in the world, has been named the PGA Tour University No. 1 player in the Class of 2027 preseason ranking, it was announced Monday evening on The Drop.
Stout, a rising senior at Oklahoma State who won the 2026 NCAA Men’s Golf individual championship in June at Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, California, has won three consecutive Big 12 Championship titles and has eight collegiate victories, including five as a junior. He also claimed medalist honors at the 2025 U.S. Amateur, was on the 2025 Walker Cup team and will represent the U.S. again in the Walker Cup this September at Lahinch in Ireland.

Stout will compete in this week’s 3M Open, his sixth career PGA Tour start and fifth this season. He is coming off made cuts at the John Deere Classic (T-15) and ISCO Championship (T-49), and in June he competed at the U.S. Open (MC), his first appearance in a major. Stout also has an exemption into the 2027 Masters thanks to his NCAA victory, given he remains an amateur.
The ranking period for the Class of 2027 began Week 23 in 2025 of the World Amateur Golf Ranking and concludes May 31, 2027, following the final round of stroke play at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship.
The remainder of the inaugural Class of 2027 rankings will be announced at a later date. With the changes to NCAA eligibility, this year’s eligible players are eligible for PGA Tour U Class of 2027 or 2028, so the Tour remains in the process of determining who is declaring for the Class of 2027.
Past PGA Tour University No. 1 players include John Pak (Florida State), Pierceson Coody (Texas), Ludvig Aberg (Texas Tech), Michael Thorbjornsen (Stanford), David Ford (North Carolina) and Ben James (Virginia). Starting with Aberg, the No. 1 player in the PGA Tour U rankings following the conclusion of stroke play at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship receives a PGA Tour card.

Since turning pro last month, James has made all five of his cuts and even held the 36-hole lead at his debut, the RBC Canadian Open. He has made $488,670 in those five starts with his best finish coming Sunday, a T-2 at the Corales Puntacana Championship.
