It was deja vu all over again at Roland Garros on Friday.
A day after Jannik Sinner was stunned at the French Open, Novak Djokovic suffered the same fate.
Sure, Djokovic isn’t in his prime like Sinner, but he’s one of the few greatest tennis players in the history of the sport. But now he’s out.
The bracket had already opened up in a major way with Sinner’s defeat on Thursday when the heat caused him to collapse.
Now it’s truly anyone’s tournament.
Djokovic won the first two sets over 19-year old Joao Fonseca 6-4, 6-4.
The kid came back 6-3, 7-5, 7-5.
Fonseca won it with three consecutive aces from down break point, to deuce, to advantage, to the win.
According to The Tennis Letter:
- Fonseca is the first teenager to beat Djokovic in a Grand Slam event.
- He’s the second player ever to come from two sets down to beat Djokovic, and the first in 16 years.
- Djokovic was previously 289-1 when leading two sets to none.
Fonseca was down 1-3 in the fifth set, and also up against two break points to go down 3-5 in the fourth.
It was the longest match Djokovic had ever played at Roland Garros, and while he pretty much has always won those marathon matches in his career, not this one.
Fonseca may grow into the future of tennis, or this may be a one-time moment.
Either way, it’s a monumental day for the Brazilian teenager at Roland Garros.
