The first Power Four school to make a coaching change this season is the North Carolina Tar Heels, who confirmed on Tuesday that Mack Brown will not return in 2025. Brown will conclude his second tenure as the head UNC football coach after previously leading the Tar Heels from 1988-97. He returned to Chapel Hill in 2019 following an extended run at Texas and leaves with more wins than any other UNC football coach in history. Now, the North Carolina football coaching search is set to begin.
Brown continued UNC’s run of competitive play in recent years, as the Tar Heels will head to their sixth straight bowl this season, including an appearance in the Orange Bowl in 2020. There’s plenty to build on and UNC is well-positioned for success, so the North Carolina football coaching search should attract big names. If you love the Tar Heels, or just want to know who will call the shots for UNC football in the future, be sure to see what the proven team of insiders are saying at InsideCarolina, the 247Sports affiliate that covers UNC.

Top North Carolina football coach candidates
One name the staff has identified as a potential target is Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann. The defensive coordinator position under Kirby Smart has been a fast track to head coaching roles recently. Mel Tucker jumped to Colorado and then on to Michigan State, while Dan Lanning has been the bigger success story after he went to Oregon in 2022.
It’s likely just a matter of time for Schumann, who is viewed as one of the top up-and-coming assistants in the nation. Georgia had the fifth-ranked scoring defense nationally in 2023 and isn’t too far behind that in 2024 at No. 15 overall despite losing loads of NFL talent.
Schumann is just 34 and also worked in the personnel department for Nick Saban at Alabama, so he has learned from the best both in coaching defense and talent acquisition, making him an intriguing candidate for the UNC football coaching search. See more candidates at InsideCarolina.
