Noah Syndergaard, who did not pitch in 2024, is hoping to return to the MLB in 2025 after reportedly significant weight loss.
Syndergaard “is down to 235 pounds after losing 30 and is working his way toward a comeback,” Jon Heyman reported on Thursday for the New York Post.
Syndergaard was previously reported to be around 240 pounds around his All-Star 2016 season for the New York Mets.
The 32-year-old last pitched in August 2023 for the Cleveland Guardians. Around 15 teams attended his throwing sessions last winter, according to Heyman, but he went unsigned during the 2024 season.
Syndergaard spent the first six seasons of his MLB career with the Mets. He helped lead the team to an NL pennant in 2015, and by 2018 was leading MLB starters in pitching velocity on multiple pitches.
He then missed the 2020 season due to Tommy John surgery and struggled to regain his previous dominance on the mound since.
After he played for the Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies in 2022, Syndergaard split 2023 between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Guardians. He finished his most recent MLB campaign with a 6.50 ERA in 18 starts.
Syndergaard indicated in a September appearance on The Terry Collins Show that he would be interested in a reunion with the Mets.
“I would love to come home to New York. Hopefully that’s in store for me. I love the fan base, I love the city, I love the culture, the history, the passion. It’s the best place to play,” Syndergaard said.
Luis Severino, who struggled with the New York Yankees in 2023, enjoyed a bounce-back campaign with the Mets this season. Syndergaard could now be hoping to begin a similar redemption arc in Queens next spring.
