Police in Texas have closed the case in the drowning death of Buffalo Bills defensive end Ed Oliver’s 1-year-old son with no criminal charges.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Texas announced the findings of their investigation on Monday via a statement provided to the Associated Press.
“The incident was thoroughly investigated by detectives, and their finding were no criminal findings. The case is now closed,” the statement reads.
No further details about the incident, including how the toddler drowned, were revealed.

The drowning death took place on June 28, but wasn’t made public until the Bills announced it on Saturday in a statement from general manager Brandon Beane.
“On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to publicly express our condolences to Ed Oliver and his family on the devastating loss of his son,” the statement reads. “It’s an unthinkable tragedy for any parent.
“We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss.”
The HCSO later confirmed the death of the toddler, who was named Ed Oliver Jr. Oliver Jr., who was days shy of his second birthday, was found unresponsive in a swimming pool at a north Houston home, according to police. He was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Oliver is a Houston native who played at the University of Houston and owns a home with his family in north Houston.
Oliver, 28, has not publicly addressed the death. He’s been with the Bills during training camp, but didn’t join the team for Saturday’s preseason road game against the Cleveland Browns. Per head coach Joe Brady, he missed a joint practice Thursday due to an undisclosed injury.

Oliver remained unavailable to participate in practice Monday, but joined the team on the field and appeared to be in good spirits.
A first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Oliver has played his entire seven-season NFL career with the Bills. He’s projected to return as a starter for his eighth NFL season if he’s healthy enough to suit up in Week 1 against the Texans in Houston.
