One day after firing manager Dave Martinez and general manager Mike Rizzo, the Washington Nationals are filling in the sudden openings. The team announced Monday that bench coach Miguel Cairo will be promoted to interim manager for the remainder of the season.

Cairo, a former MLB infielder from 1996-2012, has been a bench coach in Washington for the past two seasons. Cairo will serve alongside Mike DeBartolo, who was named as the Nationals’ interim GM in conjunction with the firing.

This will be Cairo’s second time as an interim manager in his short coaching career: In 2022, Cairo served as acting manager for the Chicago White Sox while Tony La Russa dealt with health issues that eventually led to his retirement.

As a player, Cairo spent time with 10 different organizations throughout his 16-year career, finishing his playing career with the Cincinnati Reds.
