FORT WORTH, Texas–After consecutive dominating restarts by Sam Mayer, Kyle Larson bested him on the one that counted to win the Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 in double overtime.
Mayer, who won last year’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race, caught a bump by Taylor Gray as the field took the green flag at Texas Motor Speedway for the final time. But entering Turn 1, Mayer wiggled slightly to lose momentum as Larson powered his way around the outside. Larson was able to clear Mayer on the exit of Turn 2 and lead the rest of the way for his second victory of the season.
“There was a lot of survival I felt like throughout that race, dodging some wrecks, (the) balance we had to work on quite a bit,” shared Larson to The CW. “It was fun. I felt like my car if I could get to the lead (that) I could stretch out, but couldn’t get by Justin (Allgaier). He was doing a good job of running where I needed to be.”
Unlike his attempt at the triple duty sweep earlier in the season at Bristol Motor Speedway, Larson’s entry at Texas was a last minute entry after Connor Zilisch and JR Motorsports announced a lower back injury would sideline the full-time driver this weekend. LARSON’S RESPONSE
“It means a lot that they thought of me to call up to run this thing,” said Larson. “Obviously wish Connor (Zilisch) was in the car.”

For Mayer, it was a frustrating way to finish fifth after having the checkered flag in his reach. Still, he powered his way to a top five finish driving the race-sponsored car.
“I’ve just been blessed to have really good cars at this place,” Mayer said about Texas Motor Speedway. “I’ve always gotten along with this place but it certainly pissed me off there at the end today.”
“I just had no help,” Mayer continued when asked by Bryan Nolen with Frontstretch regarding the final restart. “The 88, I beat him, I straight up out-classed him right there, and he just had a push, so it’s just unfortunate.”
Taylor Gray had his first restart among the first two rows and made the most of it. He dodged Mayer’s slide through Turns 1 and 2 by diving to the inside and claiming the second position when the checkered flag waved.
“I can’t thank all of my Joe Gibbs Racing guys enough,” Gray credited. “I tried to ruin our day a few times for us–just with dumb mistakes, towards the beginning and middle of the race–but just kind of shows how tough this number 54 group is, being able to fight back and get a good finish.”

Riley Herbst and Austin Hill finished third and fourth, ahead of Mayer. Harrison Burton, Jesse Love, Ryan Sieg, Brandon Jones and Jeb Burton completed the rest of the top 10 positions.
Justin Allgaier led 99 laps, the most among the field, but crashed with Kris Wright on Lap 155 to end his day early.
