Denny Hamlin tightened his grip on the NASCAR Cup Series Regular Season Championship on Sunday, leaving Iowa Speedway with an even larger cushion atop the standings.
While Hamlin didn’t visit Victory Lane, another strong performance combined with trouble for several of his closest challengers allowed the Joe Gibbs Racing veteran to open a triple-digit lead with just three races remaining before the regular season concludes.

Perhaps the biggest surprise behind him wasn’t who stayed in second. It was who moved into it.
Denny Hamlin Builds a Commanding Lead
Hamlin now leads the NASCAR Cup Series standings with 923 points, giving him a 103-point advantage over teammate Ty Gibbs entering next weekend’s race at Richmond Raceway.
The No. 11 team’s consistency continues to separate it from the rest of the field.
Through 23 races, Hamlin has collected four victories, 13 top-five finishes, 15 top-10s and zero DNFs, making him the only driver among the championship frontrunners yet to record a race-ending finish.
While Sunday’s race at Iowa began with an unexpected setback after a pre-race cooling unit change forced Hamlin to start from the rear of the field, the veteran recovered to salvage another valuable points day and further strengthen his hold on the Regular Season Championship.

Ty Gibbs Climbs Into Second After Iowa Victory
The biggest movement near the top of the standings belonged to Ty Gibbs.
Fresh off his second victory of the season at Iowa Speedway, Gibbs jumped to second in the standings with 820 points, passing both Ryan Blaney and Tyler Reddick.
Gibbs has quietly become one of NASCAR’s hottest drivers during the second half of the regular season, and Sunday’s win only added momentum as the Chase approaches.
Ryan Blaney now sits third with 813 points, while Tyler Reddick slipped to fourth with 803 after his afternoon ended just four laps into the race.
Iowa Creates Separation Among the Championship Contenders
Reddick suffered the biggest setback of any driver battling near the top of the standings.

The 23XI Racing driver was collected in an early crash with Erik Jones entering Turn 1 on Lap 4, ending his race before Stage 1 was complete. The result dropped him 120 points behind Hamlin after entering the weekend hoping to cut into the championship lead.
Elsewhere, Christopher Bell continued one of the most remarkable stretches in the Cup Series despite still searching for another victory. Bell’s runner-up finish at Iowa moved him to sixth in the standings with 659 points, just ahead of Chase Elliott, while extending his season total to seven second-place finishes.
The Bubble Tightens Below the Cut Line
Further down the standings, the battle around the Chase cut line remains one of NASCAR’s closest fights entering Richmond.

The battle around the Chase cut line also tightened. Austin Cindric holds the final transfer spot in 16th with 526 points. Ryan Preece trails by 29 points in 17th, followed by Ross Chastain (-47), Brad Keselowski (-48) and Erik Jones (-50), leaving virtually no margin for error over the final three regular-season races.
With only three races remaining before the postseason field is finalized, every stage point and finishing position will carry even greater significance.
