Speaking on the latest episode of Actions Detrimental, Hamlin explained why he cannot rely on his past results, his playoff seeding, or his record at key tracks. The veteran driver said his team must execute every week if it wants to remain in the fight for the NASCAR Cup Series championship.

Hamlin has experienced the highs and lows of the NASCAR playoffs throughout his career. He has entered championship battles with strong cars but failed to complete the job.

“We’ve found every way possible to fail at it, right?. There are races I wish I could take back. You realize over time that nothing is given in this sport. It’s week to week to week.”
That experience has shaped Hamlin’s approach to the 2026 NASCAR playoffs. He does not view the No. 1 seed as protection against mistakes or poor results.
“Favorites matter, but they don’t matter in the sense that if I don’t go out there this week and prepare like I need to and execute at the level that I need to execute, none of that other stuff matters.”
The NASCAR playoffs will now put that approach to the test.

Hamlin has built a strong record at several tracks included in the NASCAR Cup Series playoff schedule. Darlington, Kansas and Charlotte are among the venues where he has performed well.
Still, Hamlin said previous success cannot determine what happens in the next race.
“In my mind, I’ve got to take that body of work and make it just a little bit better. I’ve got to be a little bit better. I need to be the best that I can at all these racetracks.”
He also warned against assuming that past results will repeat themselves during the NASCAR Cup Series postseason.
“I can’t just go to Darlington and Kansas and Charlotte and say, ‘Been great there, we’re going to be great again. Everything’s different.”

The changing competition adds another challenge for Hamlin and the No. 11 team.

Hamlin expects teams that struggled earlier in the season to return with improved setups and new ideas during the NASCAR playoffs.
“And on top of that, those who you did beat the first time around, you think they’re just sitting around saying, ‘Well, we sucked then, we’re going to suck now’? Nope. They’re going to come with new ideas, and you better find something that can answer those new ideas.”
That puts greater pressure on Hamlin to improve rather than protect what he has already achieved.
