The lineup is set for the Warren Harding 500 at Phoenix Raceway.

The first round of qualifying included all 37 Phoenix entries, with the second round including just the 10 fastest to lock in the first five rows for Sunday’s race, but that’s not what you’re wondering about, right?

Warren Harding?

Yes, Warren Harding, 29th president of these United States. While running for the presidency in 1920, coming off a tumultuous and downright odd last few years of the Woodrow Wilson administration, Harding’s campaign slogan promised “A Return to Normalcy.”

LET’S HOOK UP Spanish mackerel deserve more respect. Nowadays, what better way to survive No Wake zone?

Not exactly aggressive, compared to modern sloganeering, but damn if it didn’t get the job done. And now it’s NASCAR’s turn, on a smaller stage and narrower window, as we move ahead with six weeks of “normal” stock-car racin’, beginning with what’s officially known as the Shriners Children’s 500.

There’s no word of President Harding ever visiting Phoenix, but some records suggest he owned stock in an Arizona mining company that was some two hours south of … you guessed it, Phoenix. See, full circle! Not unlike an oval.
