Two NASCAR insiders seem to like the new nickname for Carson Hocevar. On The Teardown podcast, Jeff Gluck and Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic shared their thoughts on Hocevar being called “Hurricane Hocevar.”

“I don’t mind it,” Gluck said. “I could see it growing on me. Obviously, Leigh Diffey had thought about that one. …The first moment he had something, he’s like, ‘The Hurricane!’ You’re like, ‘Oh, okay. That kind of makes sense.’ He kind of moves fast, he’s destructive, he’s a force.”

Bianchi also liked the nickname, and he agreed with Gluck, who mentioned there needs to be more nicknames for the current drivers. “You go back in the day and you had ‘Wonder Boy,’ ‘Smoke,’ ‘The Intiminator,’ ‘King,’ ‘Jaws,’ the list goes on,” Bianchi explained. “What do we have here?”

During the broadcast of the Iowa Corn 350 at Iowa Speedway, Diffey said, “Here comes the Hurricane!” as Hocevar charged towards the top five. When the race was all said and done, Hocevar earned an P8 finish, and it was his sixth top-10 finish of the year.

Denny Hamlin weighs in on Carson Hocevar’s new nickname

“It was just another work of art from Jeff Dickerson, wanting us to fight through adversity and be able to come out with a good result,” Hocevar said after the race, per Nate Ryan of NBC Sports. “That’s what he’s preached, and that’s what we’ve been focusing on. We were turned around at one point and just struggling go anywhere. We were just able to reset and regroup.

The interesting thing about the “Hurricane” nickname is that there is another NASCAR driver who had that nickname growing up. On the Actions Detrimental podcast, Denny Hamlin talked about how he was known as “Hurricane Hamlin” while competing in Virginia.

“Hurricane Hamlin. It’s been around for years. I’ve got t-shirts,” Hamlin said. Unfortunately, the nickname did not stick with him when he began competing in NASCAR, so Hamlin is not bothered by Hocevar being a “Hurricane.”

“I don’t give a shit, it’s whatever. … Just call him whatever you want. It’s fine,” Hamlin said. Hocevar will look to be a “Hurricane” again when the NASCAR drivers race at Watkins Glen on Sunday.
