The automotive industry is a global business, and automakers work hard to provide the right lineup for different markets. At BMW, that means offering limited-run special edition M models that some countries will get while others won’t.

Sylvia Neubauer, BMW M’s Head of Customer, Brand, and Sales, told BMW Blog that special edition models for certain markets are “really important for the brand” and that the automaker is “constantly working on smaller batches for various markets in the world.” Those markets include the Middle East, Japan, South Korea, and Australia.

BMW has a long history of building special edition M cars. In April, the brand launched the M4 Edition Nürburgring for China, limited to just 53 units. Last year, the company launched the M3 MT Final Edition in Japan, which was limited to just 150 units and exclusively sold in the country. In 2022, Japan got 150 examples of the BMW 7 Series First Edition.

Americans should be familiar with this tactic. In 2013, in the wake of the Great Recession, BMW North America created the M3 Lime Rock Park Edition to boost sales. It was a car that BMW named after an American track and only sold to Americans. BMW made just 200 examples of the car, which is now one of the most desired M3s ever.
