Liverpool have concluded one of the biggest transfer windows ever.
Around £450m has been spent on new players – including Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak whose signings both broke the British transfer record.

In fact, Isak is now listed as the third most-expensive football player of all time – behind only Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. Other who have arrived include Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni and Giorgi Mamardashvili.
The expectation – on a team under Arne Slot who won the Premier League last season – is to win the title again. They will also be obligated to go further in the Champions League – having been knocked out at the quarter-final stage last season.
Salah bites back
Fans are predictably excited about the prospects for the season ahead. In particular, the signings of Wirtz (£116m) and Isak (£125m) are being heralded as game-changers.
The X account Anfield Edition recently posted images of Wirtz and Isak – Liverpool’s new numbers 7 and 9 respectively – alongside those of their predecessors Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. “Name a bigger upgrade in footballing history,” ran the caption.
Mohamed Salah took umbrage.
“How about we celebrate the great signings without disrespecting the PL champions?” was the reply posted from his account. It was a reminder – and not for the first time – from Salah that the new signings have a lot of work ahead of them.
Wirtz and Isak have got HUGE potential for Liverpool
And, by the same token, that the achievements of Diaz and Nunez should not be underplayed. Wirtz and Isak are great players – yes – but when it comes to winning the Premier League title they are still unproven.
Wirtz has won the German domestic double – a huge achievement with Bayer Leverkusen – and Isak has scored 54 top-flight goals since arriving in England in 2022.
But Salah is right to deliver the reminder that in terms of Premier League medals they have done nothing yet. It sets the bar high – and serves as a reminder that nothing less than the maximum will be accepted.
Salah won’t disrespect former teammates
Salah was asked as he received his THIRD PFA Player of the Year award last month whether this Liverpool team was even better than the one that won the title.
He went on to explain the unique challenges of playing for Liverpool and that he and Virgil van Dijk would impart that knowledge to the newcomers.
It appears that Salah – as a two-time Premier League winner and a Champions League winner – is a little fed up of the achievements of his former teammates being downplayed.
Salah knows the demands better than anyone
Darwin had his critics but he bailed the Reds out of a few difficult spots en route to the title. Diaz had his best-ever season – scoring 13 times in the league – and it’s no exaggeration to say that if Wirtz reaches that total – and wins the title – he will have done very well indeed.
He has been to the top and knows what it takes to become a champion. The new signings right now do not and they need to be reminded of this.
It’s one thing celebrating signing a new £250-odd million attacking lineup. It’s another altogether celebrating a Premier League title.
So let’s be happy about the potential the new arrivals bring – while not taking for granted the hard work and dedication of those who have won here before them.
