The Mets are re-signing reliever Drew Smith, manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed to reporters on Wednesday afternoon, adding that it “means a lot to the guys in that locker room” that Smith is back.
Smith, who is rehabbing from his second Tommy John surgery, inked a one-year deal that includes a club option for the 2026 season.
Smith will earn $1 million in 2025, while the option for 2026 is worth $2 million, per Jon Heyman of The New York Post, who reports that the contract also includes incentives.
It’s possible Smith returns at some point during the 2025 season, but the more likely scenario could result in him being ready to go for Opening Day of 2026.
In 17.2 innings over 19 games for the Mets last season, Smith had a 3.06 ERA and 1.52 WHIP while striking out 23 batters — a rate of 11.7 per nine.
His season ended after an appearance on June 23, and he underwent Tommy John surgery with an internal brace procedure on July 13.
After undergoing surgery, Smith discussed his uncertain future.
“This really stings,” he said. “It sucks, man, this will be my second one. I’ve been with the Mets for a long time and I love this organization. They’ve done a lot for me over the years. Going into free agency, it’s a tough time for this to happen, but there’s never a good time for this to happen. I loved my time here — I don’t know if it’s over, obviously, but it could be, and it just sucks to see it end like this.”
Fortunately for Smith and the Mets, his time in New York won’t be ending in the fashion he thought it might.
Smith, who has spent his entire big league career with the Mets, debuted with the club and 2018 and has posted a 3.48 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 196.1 innings over 191 appearances.
The Mets’ bullpen could have some serious turnover next season, meaning there should be a clear spot for Smith to reenter the mix.
Edwin Diaz and A.J. Minter have player opt-outs, while Ryne Stanek is set for free agency.
