Mets reliever Dedniel Nuñez reportedly continues to progress well from a strained right flexor tendon he suffered in August that ended his season, per MLB’s Anthony DiComo.
Nuñez, a Dominican Republic native, will work out with Tigres del Licey of the Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM), a winter league consisting of six teams, reports DiComo. If all goes well he could even make a winter ball cameo.
The right-hander got a PRP injection in September as the reliever hoped to avoid surgery which it appears he has done successfully. Following the injection, though, surgery was still on the table as his body needed time to respond.
After the season ended in late October, president of baseball operations David Stearns provided an update on Nuñez, saying that the 28-year-old had been progressing well which was a good sign. The Mets anticipated Nuñez getting back on a mound in November and that he would have a chance at a normal offseason program.
Perhaps forgotten is the stellar season that Nuñez had in his first taste of the majors. In 35 innings, the right-hander had a 2.31 ERA (0.91 WHIP) with 48 strikeouts to just eight walks. He quickly ascended towards the top of New York’s bullpen and regularly pitched in high-leverage situations before going down with an injury.
