SANTA CLARA — The Seattle Seahawks provided veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling with $3 million in guaranteed money when they signed him in March.
Not only did the Seahawks flush that money down the drain, Valdes-Scantling ended up with Seattle’s Week 1 opponent.
“It’s a no-brainer to come to a place where you can help out in all facets, whether it be on the field or off the field,” Valdes-Scantling said this week after accepting a spot on the 49ers’ practice squad.
Valdes-Scantling might not suit up for the 49ers when they face the Seahawks on Sept. 7 in the regular-season opener. But he still can bring some value to the 49ers in preparation for the game against an NFC West rival.
When asked if he can supply the 49ers with some insight into the Seahawks, he answered, “Yeah, of course.”
Valdes-Scantling is a seven-year NFL veteran who now is with his fifth different team in the past three seasons. He signed with the Seahawks after spending part of a season with their new offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak, while both were with the New Orleans Saints in 2024.
“Obviously, I just spent the last six months with those guys,” Valdes-Scantling said. “I went against those guys every single day. Of course, I’ll be able to say, ‘Hey, these are the kinds of things that give them trouble’ or ‘This is the type of coverage they like to play’ or ‘This is the style of football that these corners like to play.’ ”
Valdes-Scantling said the biggest advantage he can give to his new team will be to emphasize to the 49ers’ wide receivers how each of the Seahawks’ defensive backs prefer to play different techniques.
Valdes-Scantling said he also weighed an option to join the practice squad of the Pittsburgh Steelers, based on his relationship with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. They played four seasons together with the Green Bay Packers.
The 49ers have five receivers on their 53-man roster: Ricky Pearsall, Jauan Jennings, Russell Gage, Skyy Moore and rookie Jordan Watkins.
Valdes-Scantling, Robbie Chosen, Malik Turner and Junior Bergen are the receivers who have spots on the 49ers’ practice squad. Teams are allowed to elevate a maximum of two players from the practice squad to suit up for regular-season games.
