The golf course at Yale University was named No. 1 when Golfweek’s Best unveiled its list of the top college campus courses in 2022.

The course, designed by Charles Blair Macdonald and Seth Raynor and opened for play in 1926, has been the site of every significant Connecticut state championship, two USGA Junior National events, and NCAA Regionals in 1991, 1995, 2004, 2010, 2015 and again in 2022. The course has also been the home of the Nike Connecticut Open.

It’s currently closed as part of a $25 million renovation, being taken on by famed architect Gil Hanse. The project began back in the summer of 2023 and is expected to extend into next year.

But tragedy unfolded on the site this week when a man died after being electrocuted by a downed power wire. The incident happened on Thursday.

Here’s more from a story at New Haven, Connecticut, TV station WTNH:

Yale officials said the man was working on the golf course and came into contact with the wire after a tree fell during a storm.

The man, between 40 and 50 years old, was a contractor employed by Eastern Land Management and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our deepest sympathies are with those impacted by the tragic accident at the Yale Golf Course yesterday evening. We are committed to working closely with city officials and others as they continue their investigations into the incident,” United Illuminating Spokesperson Sarah Wall Fliotsos said in a written statement on Friday.
