San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones had a scary experience prior to taking on the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5. The morning of the game, Jones reportedly saw a dead body in the marina outside the team’s hotel, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

Jones reportedly told teammates he was out on his balcony and saw the body floating in the water. Police were contacted, and the 49ers reportedly saw investigators and a coroner’s van pull into the area as the team was getting on its bus. The 49ers stayed in a hotel in Marina Del Rey, which is in Los Angeles County.

Police said Friday that the situation was still under investigation.

Hours later, Jones and the 49ers turned in an excellent performance in a 26-23 win over the Rams. Jones, making his third start in place of Brock Purdy, threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. He’s been a fantastic replacement for Purdy, tossing six touchdowns against just one interception in his three starts.

Jones has picked up wins in all three of his starts, and has the 49ers out to a 4-1 record. Purdy is battling a toe injury and is considered week-to-week, so it’s possible Jones will get a few more starts before heading back to the bench.

Jones, a former No. 15 overall pick, turned in a promising rookie season with the New England Patriots before battling regression. He left the Patriots after just three seasons, spending last year with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jones picked up seven starts with Jacksonville, tossing eight touchdowns against eight interceptions after Trevor Lawrence went down with an injury.

The former Patriots starter was expected to once again fill a backup role with the 49ers, but Purdy’s early injury pushed Jones into the starting role. He’s performed admirably in that role thus far.
