Liverpool have created a lot of history on the pitch over the last decade under Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, but there are still new milestones being reached year after year off the pitch.

This summer specifically, the transfer market spending has been extraordinary. Previously, the Reds hadn’t ever spent more than £200m in a window, now we’re at £300m and looking at spending more.

Furthermore, the sales has been just as mind-boggling, helping to reduce Liverpool’s net spend to below £100m now, which is astonishing when you consider the standard of each of our new signings.

In Giovanni Leoni, a young 18-year-old Italian defender, the Reds have their own little piece of history.

He’s incredibly talented and his £30m price tag should tell you everything you need to know about what the recruitment department think of him. The club’s approach is mostly data-based nowadays.

At 6ft. 4in, he’s a towering figure to have in the team and his six-year contract suggests that he will have a huge role to play over the next few years, especially since he’s not going straight out on loan.

But on Friday evening, just a few hours prior to Liverpool’s first Premier League game of the season, the club announced his signing to confirm everything and he went on to create even more history.

Player transfer announcement’s at Anfield rarely happen. The last time was Virgil Van Dijk in 2018 when the Reds played Leicester City and the Dutchman wore an all-black suit for the occasion.

As such, Leoni’s appearance at Anfield on Friday for the Bournemouth game broke that seven-year record, and it gave the young Italian a chance to see up close just how Arne Slot’s team operates.

He will add important depth to the squad when he joins training next week and hopefully, he’ll get his first taste of playing in front of the fans in a few games time when he’s up to speed with the players.
