Richard Childress Racing driver Kyle Busch died at 41 years old on Thursday, May 21, 2026. On Thursday morning, Busch’s family announced that he had been hospitalized due to a severe illness and would miss the NASCAR weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Now, the cause of death has been revealed.

“The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications,” the Busch family said in a statement. “The Family asks for continued understanding and privacy during this difficult time.”

Busch was hospitalized on Wednesday, but the specifics beyond that are unclear. The entire NASCAR industry will continue to honor the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, starting at Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend. However, the tributes will continue beyond Charlotte, as the sport mourns the death of a legend.
