The Seattle Kraken have recalled Ben Meyers, Jacob Melanson, Cale Fleury and Tye Kartye from the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
Meyers has been up and down between the NHL and AHL all season long. In the NHL, the 26-year-old has yet to record a point but in the AHL, he’s potted 19 goals and 40 points in 45 games, ranking second among all Firebirds players.
Melanson has dealt with injuries this season, skating in just 27 games. In those games, the 21-year-old has had no problems finding ways to be effective. He uses his 6’1, 205 lbs frame to be effective on the forecheck and has chipped in seven goals and 10 points.
The 2021 fifth-round pick (131st overall) has not yet made his NHL debut but is trending in the right direction. When the deal between the Kraken and Lightning that saw Oliver Bjorkstrand and Yanni Gourde exit the franchise, it opened up roster spots for young players like Melanson to potentially get their chance to play an NHL game.
Kraken Trade Yanni Gourde And Oliver Bjorkstrand To Lightning For Two First Round Picks The Seattle Kraken have traded forwards Yanni Gourde, Oliver Bjorkstrand and a fifth-round pick to the
Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for two first-round picks, a second-round pick and forward Michael Eyssimont.
Fleury, like Meyers, has spent most of his season moving up and down between the NHL and AHL. He was named to the AHL All-Star game but could not attend because he was up with the Kraken. Participating in seven NHL games has seen Fleury record one assist.
With the Firebirds, the 26-year-old has scored six goals and 24 points in 36 games, playing as the team’s No. 1 defenseman.
Kartye’s season has not panned out the way he and the organization were hoping for. In 49 games, he’s scored just four goals and seven points, well off his rookie season pace. He was recently sent to the Firebirds on a conditioning loan which saw him record two goals and four points in three games.
The brief stint will hopefully help him regain his confidence and become an effective player in the Kraken’s bottom six once again. With Gourde already gone and the inevitability of Brandon Tanev being moved, Kartye will be expected to fill in the role of a physical and strong forechecking forward that both of those players were.
