The Knicks announced Sunday that they’ve waived Matt Ryan and Jacob Toppin.
Both players were on two-way contracts and have played sparingly throughout the season. Ryan saw 3.6 minutes of action over 19 games, while Toppin played about the same amount of time with 3.1 minutes over 16 games.
SNY NBA Insider Ian Begley noted the Knicks can now add two players on two-way contracts and have the flexibility to add a player on a traditional deal. New York has an open spot on its 15-man roster.
Because Ryan and Toppin were waived after March 1, they will be ineligible to play in the playoffs if they sign with another team. The deadline to sign players to two-way contracts is March 4.
Begley reported Friday that one player on the Knicks’ radar to fill its 15th roster spot is Moses Brown. The 25-year-old, 7-foot-2 center is currently on a 10-day contract with the Dallas Mavericks, but the team is hard-capped at the first apron, preventing them immediately signing him to another 10-day contract. The Knicks are hard-capped at the second apron and have enough cap space to add a player on a veteran’s minimum deal.
Prior to Ariel Hukporti‘s knee injury, both NBA veterans T.J. Warren and Chuma Okeke of the Westchester Knicks were among those on New York’s radar for the open roster spot.
The Knicks are currently 39-20 and the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, behind the Boston Celtics (42-18) and the Cleveland Cavaliers (49-10). They look to extend their winning streak to three games on Sunday night against the Miami Heat.
