YANKTON — The Mitchell High School boys golf team battled through tough conditions on Friday.
The Kernels claimed a share of 10th place out of the 16 teams in attendance at the Yankton Invitational at the Hillcrest Golf and Country Club, shooting a cumulative team score of 335 alongside Tea Area.
Individually, Asher Dannenbring was the lone Mitchell golfer to place inside the top-10, coming in seventh place after a round of 3-over 75. Starting on hole No. 1, Dannenbring carded three birdies in his first eight holes en route to a first-nine score of 35, finishing with four birdies total.
Other Kernel performances included Carter McCormick securing a tie for 39th after an 84. Everett Morrison and Dawson Adams finished with a share of 62nd following rounds of 88, Matthew Mauszycki was tied for 70th following an 89 and Jordan Meyerink placed in a tie for 80th after shooting a 91.
Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s Jayden Antonen finished with five birdies and an eagle to secure the medalist honors at 5-under 67, also powering the Knights to a team championship with a 299 team score. Yankton’s Easton Vellek, Harrisburg’s Connor Tank and Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Tyson Blom were the runners-up at 1-over 73.
Behind O’Gorman, Harrisburg was second with a cumulative score of 305. Lincoln (308) came in third followed by hosts Yankton (319) in fourth and Brookings (325) in fifth.
Mitchell hits the links next at the Brookings Invitational on Monday, Sept. 15 at the Brookings Country Club before the Kernels host their home invite beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 19 at Lakeview Golf Course.
