Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga has been named the 2024 NWSL MVP, the league announced on Friday.
Chawinga scored 20 goals this season, setting a new NWSL single-season record surpassing the 18 goals scored by Sam Kerr in 2019. She also became the first player in league history to score against every team in a season with 10 or more teams.
In another record-setting feat, Chawinga scored in eight consecutive matches during a run where she netted goals in 13 of the Current’s final 14 matches.
“From the moment Temwa came to Kansas City, we knew she was capable of playing at an MVP level,” general manager Caitlin Carducci said in a statement.
“Not only has she been an incredible player on the pitch, she’s also been an incredible teammate and representative of the organization off it. Temwa laid an incredible foundation with her play in 2024, and we’re so excited for what’s to come in the years ahead.”
The 26-year-old Malawi international is in her first season in the NWSL and helped the Current to a 16-3-7 record and a place in the league semifinals. She is the eighth Golden Boot winner to also take home the MVP award in the same season and she is the first African international to win the award.
