The Juventus supporters also had their own more pointed tribute to Baresi, with a banner referencing a very specific moment in their shared history.

“07-03-1990: Thank you Baresi” read the banner.

It was a reference to the moment when Milan played at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels against Mechelen, the first time an Italian side had been there since the tragedy that saw 39 Juventus fans killed by the collapse of a wall.

Baresi and Milan had been told by the authorities they could not pay tribute before kick-off, but the captain took the 39 red roses anyway and walked over to the spot to lay them down, daring anyone to try and stop him.
