Justin Thomas made an encouraging start to The Players Championship after opening with a four-under-par 68 at TPC Sawgrass.

The American sits among the early contenders following the first round of one of the biggest events on the PGA Tour calendar.

Thomas arrived at the tournament still building momentum after returning from a back injury, with this marking just his second event since the setback.

He missed the cut at last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, but looked far more comfortable during his opening round on Thursday.

Afterwards, Thomas explained why the iconic TPC Sawgrass layout is one he particularly enjoys playing.

Justin Thomas explains why TPC Sawgrass suits his game

Thomas believes the design of TPC Sawgrass plays to his strengths, particularly because of the way the course demands creativity and precise shot shaping.

He said the visual layout helps him plan shots and approach each hole with a clear strategy.

“It’s just a place, like visually, it just fits my eye,” he said. “There are a lot of trees I feel like I can work things off of that I just don’t even need to go out there, and I can envision them.

“Like they’re just there. I don’t know, you’re more kind of working balls into the fairway, and then some holes you’re almost hitting distances off of tees to get certain yardages into the greens.

“I feel like I play this course backwards a decent bit, looking where the pin is to see what I want into the green, so on and so forth.

“It’s a place that just requires your sole attention on every shot, and you can get exposed pretty quickly just as well as you can get rewarded.”

The opening round was a positive step for Thomas as he continues to build rhythm following his recent injury concerns.

Justin Thomas equaled the TPC Sawgrass course record last year

Thomas has already shown how well he can perform at TPC Sawgrass.

During last year’s Players Championship, he equaled the course record of 62 in the second round. The mark had first been set by Tom Hoge in 2023.

The round was particularly remarkable because Thomas had opened the tournament with a 78, producing one of the most dramatic turnarounds in the event’s history the following day.

Despite the stunning 62, Thomas ultimately finished tied for 33rd that week.

His strong 68 in the opening round this year suggests he could once again be a player to watch as the tournament unfolds.
