OAKMONT, Pa. – Justin Thomas is going to need a hug when his second round of the 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club is over.

That’s because his 22-foot birdie putt at the par-5 12th hole turned from a chance to kick-start a comeback after a sloppy 6-over 76 on Thursday into a momentum-crushing, shoot-me-now double-bogey 7. On second thought, a hug from wife Jill might not be enough. Hopefully, daughter Molly is there too.

Oakmont’s greens are among the most treacherous putting surfaces in all of golf. Thomas’s misadventures at No. 12 could be exhibit A for why Oakmont’s greens will break many a golfer this week. Check out the video of JT’s power lipouts from his 4-putt. Golf can be cruel.
