Golf is a ridiculous sport. Need proof? Jordan Spieth is heading to the FedEx Cup Playoffs despite failing to record a single top-10 finish during the entire 2026 PGA Tour season.

Seriously.
According to CBS Sports’ Patrick McDonald, Spieth is the only player inside the top 70 of the FedEx Cup standings who hasn’t recorded a top 10 this season. And yet, here he is.

Spieth will tee it up at the FedEx St. Jude Championship this weekend with an opportunity to advance even deeper into the playoffs.
There’s something objectively hilarious about that.
We’re talking about Jordan Spieth, not some journeyman who barely secured his PGA Tour card. Spieth was once the young prodigy who looked destined to spend the next decade dominating golf.

He’s a 13-time PGA Tour winner and a three-time major champion. He owns 93 career top-10 finishes and even won the Tour Championship back in 2015. However, his most recent victory came all the way back at the 2022 RBC Heritage.
Four years later, Spieth has somehow managed to reach the FedEx Cup Playoffs without adding a single top 10 to that career total. If anything perfectly summarizes how brutal golf can be, it’s that.
One of the most accomplished players of his generation can spend an entire season searching for his best game and still remain just competitive enough to sneak into the postseason.
That’s simultaneously impressive and a little ridiculous.

Spieth currently sits 54th in the projected FedEx Cup standings. With only the Top 50 advancing to the BMW Championship, simply showing up at the St. Jude won’t be enough. He’ll finally need something resembling the Spieth of old if he wants his season to continue.
Maybe this is finally the week he breaks through. It would certainly be fitting. After going the entire regular season without a top-10 finish, Spieth could record his first one when he needs it most and suddenly find himself advancing to the second playoff event. Or, his strange 2026 season could finally come to an end.
Either way, his playoff appearance serves as another reminder that golf makes absolutely no sense sometimes. Spieth has won majors, contended on the biggest stages, and spent years as one of the sport’s biggest stars.
In 2026, his accomplishment is considerably less glamorous.

It’s survival.
For now, that’s good enough.
