  • Joey Logano won the Würth 400 at Texas Motor Speedway, his first victory since the 2024 championship race.
  • Logano became the ninth different winner in the last nine races at Texas Motor Speedway.
  • Denny Hamlin’s engine failure ended his streak of 21 consecutive lead-lap finishes.

Joey Logano maintained a low profile for most of Sunday afternoon.

He began 27th in the Würth 400 at Texas Motor Speedway. But he slowly and steadily worked his way through the field over the course of 270 laps.

He grabbed the lead from Michael McDowell with four to go. Finally, after McDowell caused an overtime restart, he prevailed over Ross Chastain and Ryan Blaney, who slotted second and third.

In his No. 22 Team Penske Ford, Logano earned his first victory since the 2024 championship race at Phoenix Raceway. It was the 37th win of the 34-year-old’s Cup Series career. He led only seven laps.

“Just slowly, methodically, a couple at a time,” Logano said of how he progressed to Victory Lane. “… The car was fast. I knew that yesterday. I just did a poor job qualifying and just grinded it out. Just kept grinding a couple here and a couple there and eventually got a win. It’s nice to get one.”

Texas turned into a Slip ‘N Slide, especially late. The race featured 12 cautions.

Let’s break it down.

1. Joey Logano continues Texas Motor Speedway parity

Add Logano to the list.

He became the ninth different driver to win at Texas in the last nine races. That stretch goes back to Denny Hamlin in the spring of 2019.

That’s not even the longest streak in track history, though. It featured a span of 13 unique winners from 1998 to 2007.

Here’s the full catalog of winners since the start of 2019. Note: Texas used to host two races each season. That changed ahead of the 2021 campaign.

  • Spring 2024: Chase Elliott
  • Fall 2023: William Byron
  • Fall 2022: Tyler Reddick
  • Fall 2021: Kyle Larson
  • Fall 2020: Kyle Busch
  • Summer 2020: Austin Dillon
  • Fall 2019: Kevin Harvick (who also won fall 2017 and fall 2018 races there)
  • Spring 2019: Hamlin

2. Denny Hamlin ends streak with DNF

For the first time in a long time, Hamlin saw the letters “DNF” next to his name Sunday.

During Lap 75, his No. 11 Toyota erupted into flames entering Turn 1 and slid through Turn 2. The engine failure cut his day short. It also ended his streak of finishing on the lead lap in 21 straight races.

Beginning with the Southern 500, the last race of the 2024 regular season last September at Darlington Raceway, Hamlin had finished — and avoided last place — in every event through last weekend’s Jack Link’s 500 at Talladega Speedway.

Those 21 in a row tied him for the eighth-longest run in Cup Series history. Carl Edwards holds the record with 28 consecutive finishes on the lead lap during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Hamlin was sitting 25th on the leaderboard before the incident. He officially slotted into 38th.

“It missed for like three-quarters of a lap,” Hamlin told Fox of his engine. “But other than that, no (warning), nothing. They’ll take it back and look at it.”

3. NASCAR stays out West next weekend

From one 1.5-mile track to another next weekend as Kansas Speedway plays host to Week 12 of the 2025 Cup Series season.

There are differences in the Texas and Kansas tracks, however. Texas is a quad-oval (think Charlotte) while Kansas is a tri-oval (think Daytona). Kansas is banked at 17 to 20 degrees in the corners, which is slightly less than Texas, which might explain the fact pole speeds are generally 10 mph faster at Texas.

And while it will be yet another tripleheader of racing action from Friday through Sunday, the coming week will include ARCA, Trucks and Cup, as the Xfinity Series goes on a two-week break.

Also, this will surely be beaten into you over the coming days, but next Sunday is Mother’s Day, so get crackin’ on those cards and flowers.
