Ellis goes 7-0 in pool and bracket matches to capture his second state championship

The first week of NFL preseason games has arrived for Florida three NFL teams. The Jaguars and Buccaneers play Saturday and the Dolphins play Sunday,
- Jimmy Ellis won the Florida Amateur Championship, defeating Ian Bell 3 and 2 at the Plantation at Ponte Vedra Beach.
- Stephanie Connelly Eiswerth won both the Northern Chapter PGA Championship and the match play championship.
- Miles Russell, Tyler Mawhinney, and Carson Brewer will compete in the U.S. Amateur at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Jimmy Ellis has another statewide championship.
The Atlantic Beach resident who garnered attention last summer by winning the Florida Amateur and earning medalist at the U.S. Amateur defeated Ian Bell of Port Orange 3 and 2 on Aug. 3 at the Plantation at Ponte Vedra Beach.
Ellis, a native of Pennsylvania, never played past the 16th hole in four matches. He beat Richard Donegan of Jupiter 4 and 3 in the round of 16, topped Christian Koehn of Winter Park 3 and 2 in the quarterfinals and then turned back Jacksonville resident Jordan Batchelor 4 and 2 in the semifinals.
Ellis went 3-0 in pool play.
Batchelor beat Kyle Williams of Palm Bay 1-up and Lance LaCombe of Jacksonville 5 and 3 to get to the semifinals.
Eiswerth wins two chapter titles
Stephanie Connelly Eiswerth of the San Jose Country Club won two Northern Chapter PGA titles in a three-day span.
Eiswerth won the chapter championship on Aug. 4-5 at The Palencia Club, posting scores of 73-70–143 to defeat fellow San Jose staff member Hayes Farley by two shots at 1-under 143. Eiswerth birdied the last three holes in the second round to go ahead.
Two days later, she defeated Mark Tullo de Best of Deerwood 5 and 3 at the Timuquana Country Club to win the match play championship.
Jason Duff of San Jose birdied the first playoff hole to win the chapter assistants championship over de Best. Both shot 4-under 140 in regulation and Duff, after a first-round 67, fell one shot behind and had to birdie the last hole to force the playoff.
University North Florida assistant coach Michael Mattiace was third (72-71–143).
Bob Wallace of Palencia won the senior division by one shot over Aaron Russell of the Sawgrass Country Club at 8-over 152.
First Coast residents get U.S. Amateur times
Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach, Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island and Carson Brewer of Ponte Vedra Beach will begin play in the U.S. Amateur on Aug. 11 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
The starting field of 312 players will compete in two rounds of stroke play at the Olympic Club’s Lake and Ocean Courses. The top 64 will advance to match play on Aug. 14 at the Lake Course.
Russell plays his first round at 3:36 p.m. (EDT) at the Lake Course and his second round at 10:21 a.m. on the Ocean Course. Mawhinney tees off at the Ocean Course in the first round at 11:13 a.m. and then at the Lake Course the following day at 4:48 p.m. Brewer will start his tournament at 3:35 p.m at the Lake Course, then play the Ocean Course starting at 10 a.m.
Russell and Mawhinney both qualified for match play at the U.S. Junior Boys two weeks ago. Russell got to the quarterfinals and Mawhinney the round of 16.
South wins fourth consecutive Florida Junior Cup
Jonah Nacional and Jaspreet Kondal of St. Augustine put in strong efforts in their singles matches but their North team fell 16.5-15.5 to the South in the 19th Florida Junior Cup at the Vineyards Country Club in Naples Aug. 2-4.
Nacional beat Josh Ogren of Lakewood Ranch 2 and 1 and Kondal halved with Jaden Peterson of Port St. Lucie as the North forced a 14-14 tie at one point. There was a weather delay with four matches left on the course and when the players returned, Ariana Silva of Sunrise edged Stella Moritz of Ponte Vedra Beach 1-up for the point that enabled the South to retain the Florida Cup.
Moritz teamed with Cooper Franklin of Ponte Vedra to win a foursomes match, 2 and 1 over Silva and Dane Mohap of Bradenton; and Charlie Hipp of St. Johns played with Qiaoyi Lyu of Celebration to top Jamie Lowry of Fort Myers and Darren Zhou of Bradenton 3 and 2.
In Four-Ball matches, Kondal and Chase Bauer of Orlando beat Ogren and Andy Dai 3 and 2.
San Jose announces Mid-Amateur
The San Jose Country Club will host the first Crown Jewel Men’s Invitational Nov. 7-9, with 36 holes of stroke play for Mid-Amateurs (25 years and older). The field will be limited to 60 players with handicaps of 3.4 or less.
