Jimmie Johnson crashed into Connor Zilisch and Cole Custer bringing out a caution on Lap 116 in the NASCAR Charlotte race on May 25.
It ended the day for Johnson, who retired from full-time Cup racing in 2020. The crash came in Johnson’s 700th start.
The seven-time Cup Series champion hit the wall first then slid down the track into Zilisch and Custer. The collision sent Johnson in the No. 84 Legacy Motor Club Toyota back into the wall a second time.
Johnson’s indicated his unfamiliarity with the Next Gen car may have been the reason for his trouble in the Coca-Cola 600. He told Amazon Prime Video he let off the throttle too early on the turn forcing him to lose control.
The race was the first for Johnson since running the Daytona 500 where he finished third, his best finish at the race since winning in 2013
