MUNCIE — Ball State women’s golf has an individual Mid-American Conference champion for the third time in program history, and she did it on the Cardinals’ home course at the Delaware County Country Club.

Ball State’s Jasmine Driscoll shot a 54-hole score of +2 (218) over three days from April 20-22. The junior from Sydney, Australia, beat out four other golfers who tied at +3 and earned a berth in the NCAA Regionals.

On Sunday, Driscoll made history by tying the lowest opening-round score in MAC Championship history with a -5 (67). She went back to even on Monday with a +5 in very windy conditions but stayed atop the leaderboard. She lost her lead briefly on Tuesday but battled back in front with three birdies in the back nine.

“I knew that the back nine was going to be harder than the front nine, so once I got rid of that, got out of the way, I felt that back nine, or front nine, which was my back nine, I could get a couple birdies rolling and be okay,” Driscoll said.

The turning point on Tuesday, according to Ball State coach Cameron Andry, came at holes three, four and five. Driscoll missed an opportunity for a birdie on the third hole but turned around and hit back-to-back birdies on four and five, including a 40-foot birdie putt on the latter.

“The gallery let out a pretty good roar on that one that I heard about three holes away, so that was pretty cool,” Andry said. “That was a big moment, gave her a little bit of a cushion.”

This year marked the first time the MAC Women’s Golf Championships were held in Muncie in the 26-year history of the event. Although they had the home course advantage, Ball State finished in the middle of the pack at fifth place out of 10 teams with a team score of +50 (914).

“I was hoping we would take advantage of that a little more as a team. Especially (Monday), just did not play our best golf, but that’s part of it, you know, and it’s one of the hard things about golf, is you play all season long, but the conference standings just come down to the final three days,” Andry said.

“We’ve been certainly one of the top two or three teams in the conference all season long, and we didn’t quite finish that high this week, but Jasmine winning definitely, you know, salvages it for us, and we played a good round today which is also nice to finish strong.”
