Jaden Soong, Aubrey Hilgers Turn Pressure Into Junior PGA Titles

The 17th hole at Fields Ranch East did not care who had led after 54 holes or who arrived at PGA Frisco with the strongest expectations.

On Friday, it asked a simpler question: Who could respond?

Aubrey Hilgers answered it twice, first with a birdie in regulation and then with a composed bunker recovery in a playoff. Jaden Soong answered it after a front nine that nearly knocked him out of contention. Their victories in the 50th Junior PGA Championships were built differently, but both came from the ability to stop fighting what had already happened and play the next shot.

No. 17 Settled Both Championships

The par-3 17th at Fields Ranch East became the defining stage for both Junior PGA champions.

Girls Division

Aubrey Hilgers

Hilgers birdied No. 17 in regulation to force a playoff, then returned to the hole and saved par from the bunker to defeat Yujie Liu.

Boys Division

Jaden Soong

Soong made birdie while Kailer Stone and Ainslie Stanford made double-bogey, producing a three-shot swing and the championship lead.

Hilgers Turns a Crowded Race Into Her Championship

Hilgers began the final round tied for eighth, only two strokes behind in a Girls Division so congested that eight players held or shared the lead Friday. She and Yujie Liu each shot 6-under 69 to finish at 6-under 282 and force sudden death.

Liu birdied the 18th to move one ahead while Hilgers stood on the 17th tee. Hilgers said she did not know she needed a birdie to extend the championship. She saw the opportunity, committed to the putt and made it.

That detail matters. Young players are constantly told to ignore leaderboards and outcomes. Competitive golf actually requires learning when to absorb information and when to shut it out. Hilgers did not need the entire equation. She needed the shot in front of her.

After matching pars on Nos. 18 and 10 in the playoff, Hilgers and Liu both found the bunker on the par-3 17th. Liu’s recovery ran through the green. Hilgers played hers within a few feet and converted the par that won the title.

Her week had already supplied a preview. Hilgers made a triple-bogey Wednesday, then holed out for eagle three holes later. She spoke afterward about finally seeing her practice show up under pressure.

Every talented junior can look impressive when the swing is flowing. Progress becomes visible when a player can absorb a bad hole, a bad nine or a bad tournament without allowing it to rewrite the story.

Soong Stops Trying to Be Perfect

Soong carried a two-shot lead into the final round, then lost control of it quickly. A bogey at the par-5 first started the slide. He closed the front nine bogey-double bogey and reached the turn four behind Kailer Stone and three behind Ainslie Stanford.

Soong later said he had been trying to be too perfect and was not fully committing to his shots. On the back nine, he freed himself up because he felt he had nothing left to lose.

That did not produce reckless golf. It produced committed golf.

Soong birdied Nos. 10 and 15, then arrived at the 17th one shot behind. Stone and Stanford found the deep bunker and made double-bogey. Soong found the green and made birdie, creating a three-shot swing that gave him the lead. A par at the 18th completed a 7-under 281 total and a one-shot victory over Chase Hughes and Aadi Parmar.

I first became aware of Jaden in 2015, when he was 5 and entered the Little Linksters Best Pee Wee Golf Swing in the World contest. He won it more than once. I have stayed in touch with Jaden and his family at different points since then and watched a gifted little boy grow into one of the country’s best junior players.

The talent was visible early. What impressed me Friday was the reset.

The Players Without Trophies Still Gained Something

My student Brevin Bennett was also in the field, one of the youngest boys competing on two demanding courses in oppressive Texas heat. His championship ended before the final round, but his second-round 76 after a very uncharacteristic opening 82 showed the response coaches hope to see. He will be back. That, I can promise you.

Junior golf has become increasingly sophisticated, visible and results-driven. Rankings, exemptions, college attention and social media can make every round feel like a referendum on a young player’s future. It is not.

A championship such as this is a snapshot. It reveals where a player is today, what holds up under pressure and what needs more work. It cannot measure the ceiling of a 14-, 15- or 16-year-old.

Hilgers earned an exemption into the 2027 Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Soong received a spot in the 2027 Tulum Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour. Both earned Junior Ryder Cup points and invitations to the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley.

Those are meaningful rewards. The deeper reward is that both now own evidence of what they can do when a championship appears to be slipping away.

Friday’s trophies were decided at the 17th. The lesson from PGA Frisco stretches much farther. Young golfers do not need a perfect week to move forward. They need the courage to remain present long enough for the next opportunity to arrive.
